Endangered Animals--Research and Art--Fourth Grade

Welcome to the Endangered Animals Project!

This project was done by the fourth grade and was a combined effort of the Library Research Program and the Art program. For the project, students did the following:

chose an endangered animal in the world
researched their animal and wrote a blog post
drew/sketched their endangered animal
created the same design on a plate
sculpted the animal in a cup form

The lesson was aligned to the California State Standards in Science, developed skills in research and writing, implemented the principles of design and the elements of art, and encouraged students to develop individual aesthetics.

Elephants are a very interesting animal of Africa. When the elephants are born they are brown, and over time they turn to gray. Their diet is grasses, leaves, bamboo, and many more things. The reason why they are endangered is because they have lost their habitat and people have been poaching. I love elephants and I hope people will stop endangering them.

What a unique spotted animal the giraffe is and it could soon be gone. Giraffes have spots, long necks, and long legs. Giraffes are up to nineteen feet tall. This animal can live in savannas all over eastern and southern Africa. Giraffe's favorite dinner would be leaves of the acacia tree. Giraffes don't normally drink water, they get it from leaves. The giraffe has three threats. One is people who want tails for bracelets, two--they want meat to eat, and three--they want the coat for a shield. Next time you go to buy any of those things, think first.

A world would be sad without penguins. Penguins are black and white and their beaks are yellow. They are found in Antarctica. They eat krill, fish, and squid. They are threatened by sharks and seals. Please save the penguins.

Hummingbird--A.D.

I think its quite sad that some beautiful animals, such as the hummingbird, are endangered. Hummingbirds have specialized long bills and they are bright and tropic colors. Also hummingbirds only live on the Western Hemisphere. Most of them live in the tropics. Hummingbirds often eat flower nectar and insects. A fact about their eating is that when they eat nectar it takes them thirteen licks per second with their long tongue. The saddest part about the hummingbird is that they are killed by hunters for their rare and beautiful feathers. If we stop hunting hummingbirds then they may be able to live.

Koalas have always been a favorite animal to many people, but that could end someday soon. Koalas have soft grey fur, gray on the top, white on the bottom. They also have white hairs on their eartips. They have little black eyes and black noses. Koalas have sharp claws so they can hug and cling on to trees. The Koalas range stretches all the way across Australia. Today they can be found in Queensland, new South Wales, Victoria, and South America. Koalas eat mostly leaves, such as eucalyptus tree leaves and tree bark. They can consume mistletoe and box leaves. Once, numbering in the millions, Koalas suffered major declines in population during the 1920s when they were hunted for their soft fur. Also, dogs kills about 4,000 Koalas yearly! I hope someday you will help Koalas population increase!

Sea Turtle--L.H.

The baby sea turtle is dying because of the filthy things we've done! Who can save it? My animal's shell is streamlined for swimming in water. It can also not put his legs or arms back in his shell. The baby sea turtle lives in warm temperate waters hundreds of miles between nesting and feeding grounds. Most sea turtles all eat jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimps, sponges, sea snails, algae, and finally mollusks. All of the sea turtles are endangered because their habitat is threatened by fisheries, the im0act of coastal development, pollution (of course), pathogens, and global warming!

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a gorgeous animal is in danger! Our very own bison. Bison have a flat face. Like most animals, bison have hair all over them. Bison wander all over North America, Mexico, and Canada. They have a flat face with a big, cute nose. Also, bison have two horns next to their ears. Bison are very strange when it comes to their diet. They eat grass, flowers, and other herbs. Their predator is a cheetah, a tiger, humanoid, and mountain lions. Why it is endangered is they didn't mate with other bison. They would meet with bulls, cows, and only sometimes other bison. These animals need help. Can you help?

Go into a world unknown, the secrets of a dangerous life of great power and responsibility. This is the life the snow leopard faces every day. The snow leopard prowls around in Asia. What this cat loves for lunch is wild sheep, goats, birds, and small rodents. I would rather stick to human food. You thought they were so powerful they had no threats, right? Well, it is all our faults for hunting them for fur boots, jackets, and even just for money and the fun of it.

The elephant is endangered. It is no harm to you and me, so why are we making them endangered? The elephant is a brown/dark grey color. They have long coarse hairs and very thick skin to keep them cool. Elephants usually live in Asia, Africa, and the savanna. This big animal eats a lot of grass, leaves, bamboo, bark, and roots. It is very sad that the elephant is endangered because of humans building on their land and because of global warming. Elephants are great and it would be very sad to see such a great animal go away.

Sea Otters--A.A.

An interesting animal is walking around eating clams. Sea otter! The sea otters is about four feet long, has a big brown nose, and does not have blubber (fat) to keep it warm. My animal lives in Japan and its habitat also stretches along the coast to Siberia and Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Baja California. My animal's diet is sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clam, crabs, snails, and about forty other marine species. There are about several hundred thousand of them. Hopefully, the sea otter will not die.

Black Footed Ferret--L.D.

I feel so bad for the black footed ferrets because they are going extinct! The black footed ferrets live in Mexico and Canada. The ferret has a tan body with black legs and feet, a black tip on their tail, and a black mask. Their legs are short, front paws are large, and their claws developed for digging. The ferrets eat prairie dogs, ground squirrels, small rodents, rabbits, and birds. The black footed ferret is endangered because of widespread destruction. I really hope black footed ferrets stay alive forever!

The cloud leopard has an amazing life and it is one of the most beautiful creatures, but it is being endangered so it's having a hard time. Cloud leopards have black spots with white lines around them and their skin is tan. This animal lives in Southeast Asia, Nepal, Southern China, Burma, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. This type of leopard eats everything from birds to monkeys and wild pigs. Cloud Leopards are endangered because of illegal hunting, rapid habitat destruction like logging and forest fragmentation, and being skinned by China. Cloud Leopards aren't just normal animals, and they need us to live, so please help cloud leopards.

It is a true fact that this bat is endangered. Someday this animal might disappear. Bats look like a bird. Their wings look like a hand and their feet look like a mouse's foot. Bats live almost anywhere except the polar regions and deserts with extreme heat. Bats eat small birds, lizards, and frogs. The bat is endangered because people have set their habitat on fire and people eat them. If you want to keep this kind species alive, DO NOT HARM THEM.

Lynx is a species that is endangered and that needs help. This animal has long ears, a short tail, and large paws that act like snow shoes in very deep snow. The lynx lives in the United States and lives in the forest. Lynxes eat mice, vole, grouse, red squirrels, and ptarmigan. The threat is we are hunting them and destroying their habitat. The lynx is an endangered animal and we need your help.

There are going to be a lot of mice and rats outside if we do not do anything to save the Mexican spotted owl. The Mexican spotted owl has dark black eyes. It has spots on its stomach and wings. The owl's habitat is in tress or Mexican lands. The owl eats mice, rats, small birds, and bugs. Its threats are humans cutting down Mexican forests and deserts. So next time you're about to throw away a piece of paper, put it in recycling so this owl can live.

The Northern spotted owl is an animal that can blend in better than most owls. It is brown with white spots. It is eighteen inches high. It lives in forests of Northern California and Canada. Its diet is wood rats, mice, and other small rodents. It is endangered. People are cutting down where it lives. Animals like these don't deserve to go extinct.

The animal that stops rodents from ruling world may disappear someday soon. The burrowing owl has brown and white fur all over the body to blend in with the dirt. It has a brown beak and it usually has light yellow eyes. Its habitat is in Mississippi, Florida, South America, Canadian Prairie, and the Caribbean islands. In late Spring and early Summer, they eat mammals such as moles and mice. The rest of the year they eat insects, especially grasshoppers and beetles. They are also known to eat birds, amphibians, and reptiles. The reason they're endangered is because of habitat destruction. So the next time you are going to build on to your house, look around and make sure you are not ruining any burrows. You wouldn't want this wonderful animal to go to waste!

If we don't stop hunting tigers, these animals will be wiped off the face of the earth. Tigers are beautiful animals with orange fur. They also have black stripes and white on their bellies and paws. Tigers live in South and Southeast Asia, China, and Russia in the far East. Tigers eat wild pigs, water buffalo, and antelope. They also attack sloth bears, dogs, leopards, crocodiles, pythons, monkeys, and hares. Threats to tigers are mainly humans because humans will illegally kill them for wealth, for fear that tigers will attack a human, and for traditional Chinese medicines. People also destroy a tiger's habitat. These animals are worth saving for their beauty, their strength, and their fierceness.

The soaring hummingbirds are being killed for their feathers. They mostly live in the Western Hemisphere. They have iridescent feathers and a long, tapered bill. They eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects, and pollen. Their feathers are their threat because they are pretty and people want them. If I was a hummingbird I would fly every day!

Sometimes in your attic or basement you see mice. It's like that outside but you don't always see them. If there would be no swift fox, there will be lots and lots of mice. The swift fox lives in the great plains of North America. They also live in the prairies of North America. They are brown and yellow tan colors on the sides of their legs. The swift fox eats rabbits, prairie dogs, mice, birds, berries, and seeds. One of the main threats is their habitat. The grass lands are becoming conservation areas. It would be sad if the swift fox went extinct because there would be lots of mice and if they carried parasites, lots of people in the future could die.

Imagine if you were a giraffe. You have a light brown body and dark brown spots. You have very long legs and also a long neck. You have horns that are five inches tall. You live in the savannas of Africa. You roam freely along tall trees and open plains. You eat leaves and acacia trees. You can live seven days without water because the leaves you eat give you enough water to stay hydrated. Now this is the part that is sad. You are being killed for your meat, fur, and sewing beads and bracelets. Those are some important facts about this animal and why we should not kill them anymore.

I would be crushed if my child didn't get to see a beautiful Koala. Koala bears look like wool fur. There's long white hair on the tips of their fur. They have long, white fur and short, black fur under it. They are small and round and are very chubby. They're about 30 pounds. Koala bears live in Australia, and Queensland in South Australia. Their habitat is eucalyptus forest, coastal islands, and low woodlands. Koalas eat bark from twelve different eucalyptus trees, leaves, and mistletoe. Koalas are endangered because of major declines in their populations. People would hunt for poor little koala bear's fur. So please, save the koalas. My kids want to see them.

What if you would never see a panda again? Well, I'm going to tell you a little bit about them so you don't need to forget about them too fast. Well, they have patches of black and white around their eyes and their ears. They live in the mountains and the lowlands of Central, Western, and Southern China. The places in China are Suchuan, Shaanx, and Gansu Provinces. Pandas eat flowers, vines, tufted grasses, green corn, honey, and rodents, as last, but not least, they are endangered because they are losing their habitat and the stuff they eat is dying. Please help the pandas!

What has three long fingers, is a mammal, and can fly? Bingo--the bat, an eerie, yet misunderstood animal. The European bat has three long fingers that hold its wing membranes. Its hands are almost human. Also, though they look like rodents, they 're actually mammals. The common diet of the bat is usually insects, but some eat fruit, and a few like blood. That kind of bat has a sort of pain reliever so it won't hurt. Unfortunately bats face threats, like people who believe the whole "bats equal blood thirsty vampires" stories. They also suffer from people's carelessness, lighting fires in caves and accidentally burning bats like a Chinese pepper pot. I just hope that people would take more time to learn about these amazing creatures and I hope this essay will help.

It would be a sad thing if your children never saw a panda bear. The panda bear is black, white, and sometimes a little gray. The panda bear used to be found in the mountains of Central China. Pandas like to eat bamboo, flowers, vines, tufted grasses, green corn, honey, and rodents. That sounds like a great appetite. The giant pandas are losing their habitat and people are taking their bamboo. Help save the giant panda so your kids could see them.

The world of Africa would be dreadful without striped zebras! Striped zebras look like...well...their stripes are wonderful because they have black and white stripes to confuse other predators by standing in a group. Zebras eat many varieties of grass and maybe the grass where you live. Zebras live in South Africa because it is a good temperature for them. Zebras are getting endangered because they are being hunted down and shot at! So try to stop killing thousands of poor zebras!

Stop! Stop shooting and save your friends that are white and cute--the snowy owl. If you don't know what they look like, these are some notes. The snowy owl has an under layer with brown and black spots. They have generous eyes and furry feet. This bird lives in North America and Alaska. My animal will eat rats, mice and lemmings. This poor animal is endangered because people who don't care shoot them. Let's put a stop to it. Go snowy owl!

Peregrine Falcon--P.R.

Don't shoot the peregrine falcon because they are beautiful and a part of life. They have a sharp gold beak, a big wingspan and sharp, green eyes. They mostly live in South America. They eat songbirds, ducks, and bats. My animal is endangered because of the use of DDT and DDE. The peregrine falcom is important because it helps you catch rodents that eat fruits and vegetables in your garden. So don't hurt the peregrine falcon!

Grey Wolf--E.L

There is one animal that is endangered and that animal is the grey wolf. The animal looks like they are almost a German Shepherd. They can also be black and white. People say that they can weigh up to 55 pounds. Wolves were once common throughout North America. Today their range is reduced in Canada. The grey wolf eats mammals. It really likes elk and deer and it is also know to eat beaver. It also has other prey. Their biggest threat is humans. We don't want this endangered species to be extinct because it would change some of the ecosystem.

The killer whale is very beautiful but most people have never seen one and probably never will. Killer whales are almost extinct from the world. Killer whales have long rounded bodies and large dorsal fins that are marked with white patches. Killer whales are found in coastal waters and open ocean. They eat fish, squid, and many more sea creatures. Killer whales are becoming extinct because of pollution and chemical contamination and I think it would be really sad if these beautiful creatures become extinct.

A World of Gods and Goddesses

Greek Black Figure Pottery

This project was a collaboration between the Art Program and the Library/Research Program. The Greeks used myths and supernatural events to explain everything that seemed mysterious--the season, the weather, even the meaning of life and death. Twelve of the most important gods and goddesses were selected. Sixth grade students chose their subject by drawing names from a vessel.

The learning objectives for this collaborative lesson include:

art history
positive/negative image
line, shape, contrast
transfer method
research
ethical blog posting

In Art, each student etched the image of their god or goddess into greenware from silhouetted handouts, painted over the image with underglaze, drew through the underglaze over incised lines, and created the name of the god or goddess using the Greek alphabet.

In Library, students researched their god or goddess and then wrote a short essay which included a paragraph on what they thought their god or goddess would say to the world today. This essay was posted on the blog along with a photograph of their pottery.

The class worked beautifully on this project following each step to create a piece of art and a thoughtful research paper.

Ares MG

Ares was a fierce, intense, and strong God. His Roman name was Mars. Most other gods feared him and trembled in his presence. He would always be wearing armor to be prepared to battle at any time. But this didn’t mean he wasn’t stylish... his armour was gold with a coat of iron for strength. His helmet had a blue feather Mohawk and a vulture and a dog on the side of his helmet which were his symbols to symbolize his strength and courage.

The truth was that Ares was not at all courageous or brave. He had been chased off the battlefield by mortals that were fighting for peace when he was fighting just for the fun of it. Most of the men he killed were running away from him because they were scared of him or they would freeze or die in fright.

I believe he would be very proud of the world today because he believes in pointless fighting and no peace. He would want the war in Iraq to continue, no peace in the middle east and, would want America to keep being stupid to keep pollution and global warming going and wouldn’t like to stop any pain or suffering because this would all lead to further war and he loves war.

Artemis-The Goddess of the Hunt N.H.

Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, moon, wood/forest, hills, and children. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the deer and cypress were sacred, representing her. She also helped with childbirth, but brought swift death with her arrows. She was often depicted as a beautiful young woman in buckskin clothes, holding a bow and arrow.
Artemis was extremely associated with chastity and virginity, and was a celibate, but in some cities, she was goddess of fertility. She was such a believer in virginity, that all of her companions (wood nymphs, etc.) were celibates. If they changed their ways, however, they may be killed by her arrows. If a man tried to approach her romantically, or accidentally stumbled upon her nude, they would also be killed. One example of that is of the great hunter Actaeon, who, while in the forest, came across a pool where Artemis and her wood nymphs were bathing. Artemis turned him into a deer and set his own hounds on him.
Imagine Artemis was around today. What would she think? I believe that she would be upset about a thing or two. With her very great belief in chastity and virginity, I think she would be immensely upset with all the immorality in the media, etc. Her animals were sacred to her, but she was the goddess of hunting, so she might disapprove of the endangerment of various species, but she also might be up for the hunting. She was sort of a “nature girl,” and valued the environment, so global warming would not rest well with her.

Hephaestus T.S.

Hephaestus is a Greek god the god of fire. He was a very muscular blacksmith. He had a great mind for envisioning what he wanted to have his sculpture look like. He was born with a lame leg, which caused him to limp, but he didn’t let it affect him while he was working.
His supernatural power of fire was especially focused on the blacksmith’s fire, which would help him work. He had a couple attributes one was the forge which is how you “make or shape a metal object by heating it in fire.” His other attribute is fire a very powerful, and strong symbol.
The most fascinating thing my god did was survive the fall from Mt. Olympus. His mother and father Hera and Zeus were fighting during the time he was born. He lived with it for a few years around four. They were fighting because Zeus couldn’t take it that his son was born with a limp leg, but Hera said he should love him for who he is. Around age five Hephaestus sided with his mother for being so kind to him. When Zeus heard this he decided the only way to deal with him was to throw him off Mt. Olympus. When he did Hephaestus flew for nine days and nine nights until he fell on the island of Lemnos where he built his palace and forges under a volcano.
If my god was alive today he would say, “There should be stricter rules for people who are caught drunk driving.” The reason he would say this is because he was addicted to rum, and I think he would not want anyone to go down that long dreadful road he went down.

Hades is the god of the under world. He is a Greek god. Hades was supposedly old, sad, and tormented. His function was death, being king of the under world. His attributes were helmets, metals, and jewels. The most interesting thing about him was that he lived in a gloomy realm of wailing ghosts and lost and evil souls. Something he would say today would be, “Good job keep dying, more business for me. Use more energy than you need, pollute, have more wars, and do bad things.”

Hera

My Goddess is Hera. She is a strict looking Greek Goddess. She was beautiful, black haired, light skinned and tall woman.
Hera is the goddess of marriage, everyone, and beauty. Her Attribute was the owl. Also, her husband, Zeus, god of sky and weather, thunder, lighting, and rain, and the god of all gods and goddess.
I think that the most interesting thing about my goddess is that she's the goddess of everyone, and beauty, and marriage. I think that the people need a goddess like Hera because she is very powerful. She also keeps everyone in order by pairing them up.
I think if Hera were in the world at this time, she would kill everyone that got a divorce. I think that because she is the Goddess of marriage and if she found that out, she would be very angry. Also I think she would be mad that the people who got plastic surgery because she is the goddess of beauty.

Hestia WH

Hestia

My goddess is Hestia. Her appearance would be seen as long flowing hair, and modest dressing, she was often seen wearing a veil. A warm aura is said to be flowing around her. Most would agree that Hestia was definitely the most gentle and welcoming of all the Olympians.

Hestia Was goddess of the hearth and the home, every hearth on earth was her altar. She always remained at Mount Olympus, welcoming back gods who stayed there for a homecoming. She would tend the fire in the hall of Olympus, keeping all the gods alive. Lastly she discovered how to construct houses. Her symbol was the eternal flame, and the hearth.

Something interesting about Hestia is that she is the god of the hearth, which is a little area that is placed right before the fire. She tended the fire in the hall of Olympus, which kept the gods alive. She was also the kindest of all the Olympians. Also, she never became a part of the struggles of other gods.

If my goddess were able to see what present day earth looked like, she would probably think it is sad, and would turn her face away in shame. She would be very upset about modern problems like pollution and global warming. She would react most of all to the wars like the Iraq war, and the wars in Africa. She would think they are appalling, and gruesome. She is the goddess of kindness and gentleness, and the world today shows little of the two, therefore my goddess would be shocked at the world today.

Apollo was a handsome god. He took the form of a young man. Apollo had blond curly hair and no beard. Sometimes Apollo took the form of a dolphin.
Apollo has many symbols and functions. The lyre was one symbol because he was the god of music and light. The bow was his symbol because he and his sister, Artimis, were great hunters. The sun was his symbol because he was the god of light. He also was the god of healing.
Apollo has down many interesting things. Although the most interesting thing he has down is when he killed the serpent Gaia. Gaia was the old patron goddess of Delphi, but when he found out that the serpent tried to kill his mother, Leto, he set off to kill it. He did and claimed Delphi for himself.
Some people would ask what would Apollo say about the world today? I think he would love that music as pretty much taken over the world. Although it think he would hate the pollution because it blocks out the sun.

Poseidon JI

Poseidon was a Greek god who like other gods, appeared with many qualities of a human. Poseidon had long wavy hair which rapped around his head. He had a lengthy mustache that flowed down from his upper lip to his beard. One thing that Poseidon always carried around with him was his trident. Poseidon was unique in more than just his appearance.

Poseidon is one of the most powerful gods in Greek Mythology. He has control over the sea, making him have a lot of control over any people traveling over seas. Not only did he have control over salt water but also fresh water. All earthquakes are also under the control of Poseidon. Finally Poseidon was the god of horses and bulls. All of these powers contribute to who Poseidon is.

Not only was Poseidon powerful he was interesting in several ways. Poseidon would send a fierce tidal wave at anyone who angered him. Whenever Poseidon rode over seas in his golden chariot the seas were calm. Poseidon could create horses out of the crests of waves. For those who he did not trust he would dry up near by lakes and other bodies of water. Each of Poseidon’s powers were used for what he thought was right, and for his own benefit.

If Poseidon was here today I believe he would have countless things to say to our world. I think he would say, “ In the current world the oceans are repulsive. We must clean the oceans not only to save ourselves but our future generations.” I believe that Poseidon would encourage, and discourage global warming. I believe he would encourage it for the reason that it is melting giant glaciers making the amount of water in the world increase, giving him more power. I imagine that he would discourage it because it causes the air and oceans to be polluted to. Over all Poseidon would want to change the world for the better of everyone.

Zeus was the god of the sky including rain, thunder, and lightning. His attributes were to give power and make it orderly in the Greek society. Having all theses powers made him able to call rain and lighting.
There are so many interesting facts about him. For example his nickname is Jupiter and his main symbol is the thunderbolt. The one fact that I think is the most interesting is when he gets mad or someone angers him he hurls or shoots thunder bolts. I think that one is interesting because the thunderbolt is his symbol, so it is like throwing his simple at you.
If Zeus was here today I think that he would probably say something like, try to stop global warming, and start to use electric cars. He also might try to get out of the Iraq war by having piece with them. I think that it would be really cool If Zeus could visit and if I could I would definitely ask him tons of questions.

Have you ever heard of the Greek god Hermes? He was like no others. Hermes' main job was to be the messenger of the gods, and accompany souls to the underworld. He had brown hair, and wore a hat of straw, and winged sandals that helped him fly to deliver news from one god to another. Hermes was a very important god of Ancient Greece.

One very interesting fact about Hermes is that when he was born he invented fire and the lyre. Also, he was the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and Maia, a minor goddess. Hermes was also concerned with sheep and goats. Another thing is that Hermes loaned his winged sandals to Perseus when he went to fight the gorgon Medusa and gave him a helmet of invisibility. Hermes also carried a staff entwined with snakes.

If Hermes was in the world today I think the level of our technology would impress him. But he would be surprised of what the world has become. With our pollution, wars, and global warming, he might be angry that we didn't take care of Earth. I would agree with him because we don't really take care of Earth, but we say we do.

Apollo had many different functions and symbols. He was the god of prophesy, music, and healing. These were his known functions. The crow is the symbol for disease, which makes sense why it was his symbol because he is also the god of healing. Apollo was a very important part of Greek history.

There are numerous interesting, and fascinating facts about Apollo. One fact is that he has a twin sister, Artemis. The most fascinating fact about Apollo in my opinion is that he never got married. I thought that because he is known as being very handsome, he would be married. Did you know that his Roman name is still Apollo? He is also the son of Zeus and Leto. Overall, Apollo was a very fascinating man.

If my god, Apollo, were to say anything to the world today, I think that he would say, “Why do we have to fight? Fighting causes death and injuries. You see, I have to heal these injuries, and it hurts me to see people who are hurt. When I am healing them, I think about their home life. Some of these fighters have families (husbands or wifes, and sometimes children). I mean, I understand why they are fighting, but why can’t we fight without violence. Aphrodite was considered one of the most stunning goddesses. The Trojan prince, Paris, had to choose which of three goddesses was the most beautiful. The choices were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Out of the three, Aphrodite was chosen the most beautiful.
Today, there are many horrible things going on in the world. For example, there is global warming because of the big cars, and all the oil we are applying. I would expect that Aphrodite would be extremely against the entire world becoming more and more ruined. A reason why she would be against global warming is because she is the goddess of fertility (and love and beauty), and she would be against all the trees and the nature being ruined.

He was the god of all gods. To use his power he used lightning bolts to gain attention and to make others fear him. He also brought order to his Greek community by threatening to hurl lightning bolts to destruct the rule breakers.

One of the very fascinating things about Zeus is that his brothers and sisters were swallowed by his father Cornus. Later in his life, he made his father vomit up his sisters and brothers. Also, one of his other names was Jupiter.

Zeus would think that the amount of pollution was so bad he might destroy something unnecessary like cars and factories. He might interfere in the war between Iraq and USA. She is the goddess of the Hearth and Home and takes care of the family. Her symbol is the flame. Even though she was the goddess of the home, she refused to be married. She remained a virgin goddess.
Hestia is such a wonderful goddess because when you first find out what she is the goddess of you think it's nothing. But really it is something. She protects the home and families. She watches over them like a Christmas angel, She takes care of families and her own. Some Greeks had even carried a certain fire with them in her honor.
If Hestia could see the world today she would be very dissapointed. All this fighting and war. All the blood and tear from innocent people. And pollution and global warming! It kills the earth. Overall Artemis was a beautiful and strong woman.

Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and one of the twelve Olympians. She was the twin sister of Apollo and her Roman name was Diana. Artemis was also the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Also Apollo and Artemis were born under a palm tree in Delos. Artemis and Apollo were best friends and were always kind to each other.

Artemis was a very interesting and fascinating goddess. For example, although Artemis is a virgin she is one of the many goddess involved with childbirth. She had very different opinions then other goddess though, for instance, if a male were to ever see her bathing she ordered them to be torn apart. And also she was in love with her floppy eared dog, so that shows that Artemis is not totally heartless.

Even though Artemis is not here with us now, if that were the case here is what I believe she would say about the war in Iraq. As I had mentioned before Artemis is a very strong and independent women and was also the goddess of the hunt. This goddess was very skilled at arts and crafts, and planning strategies for war. She is one of the Greek Olympians, who sit atop the legendary Mount Olympus, watching in approval (or disapproval) the mortals that go about below. Athena was a respected goddess in Greece, and although she was Greek, her Roman equivalent is called Minerva. In common Greek art, she is usually depicted with her helm on her head and her legendary shield in her hand. She is usually dressed in full armor, being the goddess of war, but she is exceedingly beautiful.
A few of Athena’s attributes are the olive tree, an owl, her helm, and the celebrated shield with Medusa’s head imprinted on it. Whoever glances at this deadly shield will be suddenly turned to stone. The olive tree is typically associated with Athena because of one of many Greek myths where a contest took place between Athena and Poseidon, the sea god. They were competing to see who would be the patron god of Athens, the capital city of Greece. They would each give a gift to the city, and whoever gave the best gift would come out as the winner. Poseidon began by presenting a lovely saltwater spring. Athena then produced the olive tree. The tree gave many resources, whereas the spring was lovely but not useful. Athena had won the contest.
Athena was the child of Zeus and Metis. She was born by coming straight out of Zeus’s head, fully grown and armed. Because of this, Athena has always been the favorite child of Zeus. Also, because of her skill in making strategies, she has never lost a battle, not even to the war god, Ares.
I think that if Athena ever saw the way we have made progress in science and the arts, she would be very proud, seeing as she herself introduced science to the world. If someone explained to her about the elections, she would probably be confused. I think that she would think that if we’re going to choose a president, it should be someone who is not mortal, like the Olympians. All in all, I think Athena would be proud of the way our world has developed.

Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. When she was six years old in 1960 she enrolled in William Frantz Public School (which wasn't an intregated school). The only teacher willing to teach Ruby was Barbara Henry. To get into the school safely Ruby had to be led by the Federal Marshal's troops. The students at the school tried to kill her, but she was brave enough to stay in school.
Today, there are no more segregated schools in the United States because of Ruby Bridges' actions. Blacks and whites can now be friends without being in danger. Ruby Bridges has changed the United States in a good way forever.

The Freedom Riders

The freedom riders were a group of people, both black and white, who traveled around the county to help stop segregation. Some of the riders included James L Farmer, William Mahoney, John Lewis, Jim Zwerg, James Peck, George Bundy Smith, Fredrish Leonard, William Stone Coffin, and many others totaling to 436 riders. The leader of the riders was James L. Farmer, and 3/4 of the riders were under 30. The rides took place on May 4, 1961, because of the court decision Bonton vs. Virginia in 1960. They followed each other in "sit-ins" of segregated lunches. They forced the U.S. to create anti-segregation laws. They wanted to change segregation laws because the blacks weren't treated as well as others. The freedom riders helped change how we are today by influencing people to help boycott and take a part in a sit-in. They were an effective, non-violent group that worked together to help end segregation.

You may know her as Rosa Parks, but she really should be known as Lady Freedom. Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Rosa Parks grew up on a small little farm in Alabama with her maternal grandparents and her brother named Sylvester. Rosa Parks was a very extraordinary student, and was one of the few blacks who went to a college, a State Teacher Collage. Rosa Parks started a lifelong membership at an African Methodist Episcopal Church. This experience was what encouraged her to become a Civil Rights Activist. Later on in her life she was dubbed, " Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement" On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the middle of the bus. Normally blacks had to sit in the back or in the middle, but if a white did not have a seat then black had to give up their seat in the middle to go sit either in the back or had to stand up. Rosa had a seat in the middle and a white needed a seat. She refused to get up, leaving the white to stand. Rosa took a stand for blacks all over the world, and went to jail because of it. Rosa is quoted as saying "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically tired, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was 42. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in." This act is now known all over the world. Rosa Parks died October 24, 2005 , but she will always be remembered. If Rosa Parks wouldn't have had the courage to take a stand the world that we know today would not be the same. Today people respect blacks because of what Rosa Parks did. The One and Only Rosa Parks

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born on Feb. 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Eventually she died on October 24, 2005 in Detroit. Her furneral lasted seven hours long! She was known as the "Mother of Modern Day Civil Rights Movement." Her famous action was refusing to give her seat up to a white man on December 1, 1955. She was a leader in the Civil Right Movement along with MLK. Her Actions triggered the Montgumory Bus Boycott in 1955. One of her most important actions was triggering the Montgumory Bus Boycott. Another important action was starting the USA Civil Rights Movements. Her actions were one of the first of the NAACP in order to gain rights. After her action, she became a symbol of peace for the non-violent protest. All of of Rosa's actions changed the way we live today and we will surely never forget her. KM & JL

Rosa Parks was a black woman who is said to be the "Mother of modern-day civil rights movement." She was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama. She was a black woman who helped start the Montgomery bus boycott. On December 1st 1955, she wouldn't give up her seat to a white person who wanted her seat. Then she was arrested and put on trial for civil disobedience which triggered the Montgomery bus boycott.

Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama February 4th 1913. She was home schooled until she was 11. On December 1st 1955 she refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus she was riding. She was arrested for this, and her trial was on Monday December 5 1995. Her actions on the bus triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott, so many people stopped riding the segregated buses because they thought they were unfair. In 1979 Rosa received an award from the National Association for colored people. Rosa was important because it showed people that they could stand up for there rights without fighting, and she became a symbol of the power of non violent protest. If Rosa had not stood up for blacks it is very likely people wouldn't have seen how unfair the Jim Crow Laws were, and not stand out against them. Today blacks can vote, write what they want about who they want, get jobs, and are treated equal to all whites. Rosa Parks passed away in Detroit Michigan on October 24th 2005; she was 92 years old. Her funeral lasted 7 hours which showed how important she was to everyone.

The Freedom Riders

The Freedom Riders were a group of people who were fighting for racial equality and civil rights. They would go on buses from town to town trying to convince people to help them.
Some of the most known freedom riders include:

James L. Farmer
William Mahoney
John Louis
Jim Zwerg
James Peck
George Bundy Smith
Fredrick Leonard

Not only were they black, but they had whites fighting also. 3/4 of the people were under 30 years old.
Their rides of freedom began in Washington D.C. in May 4, 1961. They continued their journey throughout the south. They had many encounters with violence along the way. One event was when one Greyhound bus they were traveling in was firebombed, and another a group of them were beaten in a alley way by racists.
What they did eventually put a stop to segregation and discrimination in our nation.

6-year-old Courage

Imagine going to a new school with new kids and basically a new life. But in this school, everyone hates you, and not because you're mean, but simply because you are black. This is exactly what Ruby Bridges did at the age of six when she enrolled in William Frantz Elementary School in 1960. The only teacher that was willing to teach Ruby was named Barbara Henry. All of the other teachers refused to teach a black student. But this was a small punishment compared to what other white kids were threatening to do. In fact, Ruby needed federal marshal's protection to enter the school. Becoming a part of an all-white school took an immense amount of courage, but this six year old girl did it. Thanks to her and many other freedom-fighters, kids of all colors and ages can now come to the same school and live without fear or racism. Now, Ruby Bridges has four kids and a husband, living the life no black person could have imagined back then. But thankfully, "back then" is not now.

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 and died October 24, 2005. She was an African American who worked as a civil rights activist and seamstress. On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to give her seat to a white person. James Blakes, the bus driver, demanded Parks give the seat to the white person. She didn't do it and started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Her bravery was important because black people couldn't do a lot of things that white people can do.

Little Rock Nine

The Little Rock Nine was a group of people that made a big difference in the academic world for black students. The group contained nine people by the names of: Ernest Grein, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefforson Tomhas, Terrence Roberts, Corlotta Walls Lonier, Mimnijean Bown-Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mother-Shed-Wair, and Melma Pattillo Beals.
During the Civil Rights Movements, black people were treated very poorly and weren't considered equal to white's. On, Monday September 23rd 1957, the Little Rock Nine were escorted by police into the Little Rock's Central High-school. They were the first blacks to attend this high-school.
This was a major jump for the black education.

Ruby Bridges Rocks!!!

Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi in 1954, and she was born into poverty. Later in life, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. She became famous because she was the first black person to be enrolled to a white school. While she walked to the school, people threw trash and other objects at her. Some people even threatened to kill her if she didn't go back to a black school. But she was kept safe by marshals.

Her first day of fame was November 14, 1960. At that day, she was six years old. She was part of a program that selected very special black kids that got to go into a white school. Since she was black, she was the only student in her class because no one wanted to be in a black girl's class.

This was important because now schools are not segregated partially because of her. If it wasn't for her, you might not be sitting next to the person next to you right now. But even today, some people are still segregated by the color of their skin. Today, she is still alive and her story has become a book.
